With the amount of miles I cover in a season, I tend to do many oil changes. This was a mod I had been considering and should have done awhile back. Had I done it back then the Scotts would have paid for itself in oil filter savings. It just makes sense if you ride alot. Not only do you save on oil filter costs in the long run, you'll get better filtration and flow. Last oil filter you'll have to buy.
The way this works is it uses a Medical grade 304 Stainless Steel micronic filter cloth with laser cut 35 micron holes. So that means that nothing larger than 35 microns will pass through, period. To give some idea of size, sand is about 125 microns and a white blood cell approximately 25 microns. Standard filters will filter down to 10 microns, but also allow particles as big as 300 microns pass since the holes are all different sizes. The Scotts also has a Rare earth magnet (small silver disk on the top of the filter assy) as a prefilter.
Another advantage is flow. Standard filters don't flow very well when the oil is cold, sometimes to the point that the bypass valve opens and unfiltered oil is passed into the engine. 1 square inch of the Scotts filter material will flow 1.9 gallons, at 1psi, at 70 deg Fahrenheit pre minute. In total the filter will flow 59 gallons per minute (1psi, 70deg). So much better flow at all temperatures.
Cleaning is done with anything that will cut oil like dish soap or carb cleaner. Putting it together and taking it apart gets easier with practice, nothing too tricky. Only problem I found was the filters used to come with a strap wrench to tighten and remove them without damage. They now include a cup wrench which fits over the end. Problem is that the 929 headers sit too close to the filter to allow the cup wrench over the end. So I guess I'll be off to sears to pick up a strap wrench now.
I'm anxious to see what it catches when I do the next oil change.
